An Interview with Christopher Lochhead on The Genius of Category Design

An Interview with Christopher Lochhead on The Genius of Category Design

An Interview with Christopher Lochhead on The Genius of Category Design 1920 1080 chase

Perhaps the single biggest distinction between the Silicon Valley elites & the rest of the world is their ability to design & dominate a category – and few understand that better than chief evangelist, Christopher Lochhead. He rejoins Moe to recap five years’ worth of insights since the release of Play Bigger.

The Art of Seeing What Others Don’t See

There’s no shortage of marketing hype in the world today – whether it’s coming from the self-proclaimed experts or just individuals and organizations barking reasons on why they’re ‘the best in the world’ at what they do.  Our society is inundated with it, and if you’re breathing, you’ve undoubtedly seen or heard such a sentiment in the last day or even hour.

Needless to say, legendary marketing is the exact opposite of that – It speaks a different language all together, and rarely is it ever hype.  Six years ago, Al Ramadan, Dave Peterson, Kevin Maney, and Christoper Lochhead introduced me to a new marketing discipline they call Category Design – which at its essence shifts the perspective from competing in an old game to defining an entirely new game and newer playing field.  Their seminal book – Play Bigger not only gave us the blueprint for modern company building; more importantly, it challenged us to never lose sight of the problem{s} we’re solving.

Lochhead has become a wonderful friend, and without question, the one individual whose voice and marketing philosophy I trust above anyone else.  I was thrilled to chat with him recently to catch up on Category Design six years later, his two world-class podcasts, his new newsletter, and the most recent impact areas that has him fired-up.

An Interview with Tom Rath on Life's Great Question

An Interview with Tom Rath on Life’s Great Question

An Interview with Tom Rath on Life’s Great Question 1920 1080 chase

In an important & timely conversation, Moe is joined by leading workplace researcher and the author of StrengthsFinder 2.0, Tom Rath to discuss the correlation between contribution and wellbeing.

Life’s Great Question

Few have contributed to understanding the concept of modern work as Tom Rath. In his nearly two decade association with Gallup, he not only actualized the concept of Strength based performance; but he brought to life a concept of wellbeing that goes way beyond career fulfillment and focuses instead on the science of designing a meaningful life.

Tom’s work has been an integral part of my life since I first received an advanced copy of StrengthsFinder 2.0 nearly 13 years ago. It was a concept that I had embraced in building my organization with New York Life; still I was so outwardly focused that I neglected to align my own life with the skills that most ignited my impact. One thing for certain, I’m most alive when I know I’m contributing to the success and wellbeing of others, and it’s people like Tom who continually reinforce why that’s the most important work that any of us can hope to achieve.

Tom’s latest book – Life’s Great Question: Discover How You Contribute to the World is the purest reflection of an individual who was born to serve. It goes without saying that Tom’s impact on the world is far-reaching – but as you listen to this conversation, you’ll walk away understanding why it’s his character and his example that truly brings his work to life.

Episode Overview:

  • The science of designing your life for optimal performance?
  • An approach to change that’s more inviting and actually works.
  • A smarter way to look at your current work/role, and the question that ignites it.
  • Life’s great question – what is it?
  • Unpacking the three key components of job crafting.
  • Why all teams need to create, operate, and relate?
  • The myth of following your passion and the importance of actualizing your contribution?
  • The key question that will help you commercialize your contribution?
  • Why reconstructing yesterday is more impactful than designing tomorrow?
  • What does a healthy relationship with money look like?

An Interview with Kapil Gupta on The Hidden Dimension of Sustained Performance 1920 1080 chase

In their initial episode of 2020, Kapil and Moe discuss why the Truth often eludes us, why it always lives in the question, and what happens when you discover it. They also explore the hidden dimension of sustained performance & the deep patterns of the mind.

Why Performance is Always a Byproduct

I’ve always had a deep desire to contribute to the success and wellbeing of others – it’s what gets me out of bed in the morning and it’s why I love to share what I learn. And, it’s perhaps why I have so much appreciation for the opportunity to engage with Kapil. His is a perspective that never fails to challenge the depth of my thinking, and this episode is no exception.

Mid-way through our conversation, you’ll notice him pushing me to tell him ‘why I always want help people?’ And while I’ve always felt it as a calling or somewhat innate; he helps me see it from an angle that I’ve never really considered. Listen for yourself and see how it impacts your thinking.

  • The ultimate trigger of fear?
  • What we get wrong about hard work and effort?

An Interview with Kapil Gupta on The Single Biggest Barrier To Self-Improvement

An Interview with Kapil Gupta on The Single Biggest Barrier To Self-Improvement 1920 1080 chase

Moe & Kapil dig digger into the barriers of sustained excellence

Topics include: Confidence, Arriving, Failure, Winning, Marketing, Selling, and Acceptance.

Greatness Redefined

Few understand the essence of human achievement like Kapil Gupta – To him, each of us is born with the seeds of greatness; yet it’s a tiny minority who will ever experience that potential.  “The number one most critical element of greatness is to overcome the barrier of being conditioned by society…” he says – and while that makes so much sense to those of us who follow him; to divorce oneself from a lifetime of conditioned habits is no small feat.

Rarely do I have a conversation with him where I don’t leave inspired to reexamine the very nature of how I think, work, and live – and this interview is no exception.  This segment extends our last discussion by digging deeper into the barriers to sustained excellence, and we begin with a critical insight about how one continually protects her confidence.

Episode Overview:

  • Where confidence comes from and how to access it?
  • Why each of us gets what’s acceptable to us, and why we’re exempt from that which is not?
  • Why things always happen before then happen?
  • Why some of us feel we ‘belong’ while most don’t?
  • What it really means to give oneself’s permission to be great?
  • What does ‘arrival’ really mean?
  • The single greatest barrier to self-improvement?
  • What is the true essence of marketing?
  • What the most accomplished sales people never do?
  • Why understanding what not to do elevates your power?

Perpetual excellence is revered, yet few ever experience it. In their continuing dialogue, Kapil Gupta and Moe Abdou explore the hidden dimensions of world-class performance.

The Truth About Performance

Few understand the essence of perpetual excellence as Kapil Gupta. If you know anything about him or have followed his work; you undoubtedly know that he’s as unconventional with his thinking as he is uncompromising with his beliefs. To him, the Truth supersedes everything. It’s the source by which all greatness emerges. It’s the singular, most elusive characteristic that distinguishes high achievers – still, few ever experience it.

In our latest episode, we’ll dive into the roadblocks and intangibles that are likely keeping you stuck – most importantly though, we’ll get clear on what you have to do to rid yourself of mental conditioning that’s ruining your life.

Episode Overview:

  • Why greatness always starts with your approach?
  • Why progress starts with understanding?
